This is a working report proposal of our group;

EXPLORING THE USAGE OF WIRELESS TECHNOLOGIES AMONG THE SECOND YEAR MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA PAHANG.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Wireless is a technology that always been developing since it created. Generally, it is a technology that basically worked in communication area. This technology had been widely used all around the world nowadays. It makes life more easily, and faster. A wireless technology refers to technology that transfer electromagnetic wave that carry signal over part or the entire communication path. It transfer signal or information, in the fastest way as it could be and delivered correctly to the destination. People around the world had been trying improving this kind of technology in term of application in life. Cellular phones and pagers, Global Positioning System (GPS), and Bluetooth are example of the improvement of the wireless technologies. Instead of enhancing our life in terms of communication, wireless technology had been developed to an educational area. For sure, it will be beneficial for students and lecturers.

1.2 Objectives of study

Research Objectives
Research Questions
1. To find out UMPs' second year manufacturing engineering students knowledges about wireless technology.
1. Do the students know about wireless technology?
2. To determine the frequency the usages of wireless technology among the student.
2. How much the frequency the students use wireless technology in their daily life?
3. To explore the benefits of wireless technology among students in their activities.
3. What is the advantages of wireless technology in the students activities?

1.3 Definition of terms

Wireless technology is improving all the time, but at present, there are two types of wireless internet connections, satellite and GPRS.
Wireless is a term used to describe telecommunications in which electromagnetic waves (rather than some form of wire) carrythe signal over part or all of the communication path.
A wireless internet connections, or wireless metworking, is defined as technology that allows two or more computers, to communicate, (enabling file sharing, printer sharing, internet connection), using standard protocol but without the use of network cabling.
Satellite Communication is available everywhere and only requires a special satellite dish, a satellite modem, (reception equipment), and the software to run it. The satellite dish is usually just a few inches larger that a TV satellite dish, although new styles are being designed all the time. Satellite wireless internet offers a connection speed up to 500Kbps.
GPRS, which is an acronym for General Packet Radio System, is only available in some areas and offers a connection speed from 56 Kbps to 115 Kbps.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Wireless Development

From Tialling Vonk and Rolof Mulder,IICD Research Brief – No 6, March 2003

From this article, the definition of wireless is an infrastructure to communicate ‘through the airwaves’, in other words, no cables are needed to connect from one point to another. The journal discuss about the development of wireless especially wireless network. It is because ground cable has high-density environment of economic. Also, the strengths of wireless networks are their easy installation, low costs, high capacity, and no transmission costs. For the weakness, it the sensitive equipment and the need for ‘line of sight’ (LOS) and specialized. The number of wireless user influence wireless connection speed which is the more users connected wireless access point the slower the connection become. We have chosen this article because the pattern and the similarity of the content in our research.

2.2 Wireless and Mobile Technologies that Enhance eaching and Learning.

From T.C. Liu, H.Y. Wang, J.K. Liang, T.W. Chan, H.W. Ko, and J.C. Yang ; National Central University, Taiwan. Journal of Computer Assisted Learning (2003); Wireless and Mobile Technologies that Enhance Teaching and Learning.

This article is chosen because it is link related in our study, generally about wireless technology in education. The journalists highlighted the concept of Ubiquitos computing system, a computing system is ‘calm’ and is part of everyday environments and user’s interaction is available wherever the users need it. Based on this concept of system, these researches were working on developing a new educational program by using wireless technology. Wireless Technology Enhanced Classroom (WiTEC) is a new environment of studying in this modern world. The concept is simple, by using wireless network that provided, each student, or teachers will be provided a handheld infrared remote controller for participating in learning activities. Plus, the classroom also will be provided with electronic whiteboard; e-board. Those things are strictly connected to classroom computer for support. WiTEC are believed that can improve student and teacher to concentrate on teaching and learning itself rather than spend too much time and effort on tedious tasks.

2.3 Students as 'Free Agent Learners'

The research of this articles was written by David Nogel on 24th April 2009.

We had choose this journal because it is related in our study which is to explore the benefits of wireless technology among students activities. According to this research, majority of students in the world use wireless technology as a trends to make their life easier. The journalist highlighted the activities of students using wireless technology trends nowadays. Most of the students use this technology trends to get more information to understand difficult concepts, see the results of their problem solving, as a communication tools, and others. Not just students follow this trends but also teachers. Most of teachers are interested in learning how to integrate gaming into daily learning activities. Plus, this trends can make students and teachers get extra information in order to get more knowledges.

Students as 'Free Agent Learners'

3.0 METHADOLOGY

We need wireless connection in University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) because it is easy to spread the information among online students about the resources available especially when there are assignments or projects to be done in a short period. By using wireless we can also access to useful information.
Now, we want to know whether UMP’s students know the important of wireless in the campus. The study will be conducted in UMP and the target is Manufacturing Second Year students which have 62 of them include 26 female and 36 male.
Then, we will speared out the questioner to all the Manufacturing Second Year Student.

Year

female
2
36
26

Based on the journal, articles and books that we us, we will conduct research how far people know about wireless technologies.
