Literature review is the summarizing the articles that we research. We begin with to describe about development of wireless or evolution of wireless technology. Second, we discussed about advantages of wireless technology and lastly we evaluate about implementation of wireless technology in education. In literature review, we synthesis and evaluate the articles according to the research question earlier.
2.1 Development of wireless technology
Nowadays, wireless networking has become more available, affordable, and easy to use. People are adopting wireless technologies in large number. While the laptop users usually have free wireless connections available in places like coffee shops and universities.
In this era, wireless communication is becoming more important and it is the branch of telecommunication. For example, cellular telephones and PDA functions are to handled wireless radio such as Maritime VHF radio transceiver use electromagnetic waves to implement a form of wireless communication technology. The prices are decreasing and the management become easier. It provided whether student demanded to get the devices such as PC and PDA to help them in research and assignment. The goal of this project is to explored the usage of wireless among the second year Manufacturing Engineering students of University Malaysia Pahang (UMP).
Wireless is expanding to develop in the area especially wireless network. For example, it can be used to connect computer with LAN (Local Area Network) that develop by Instituted of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEE) and also connected to WAN (Wide Area Network). Furthermore, ground cable has high-density environment of economic system. Besides, the strengths of wireless networks are their easy installation, low costs, high capacity, and no transmission costs. In UMP, LAN is used because of it speed and high capacity. Now we want to know how frequently the second year Manufacturing Student used the wireless network or wireless radio such as handset or radio in UMP.
Darryl K. Taft (2009) state that “the survey show 94 percent of corporate developers expect the development wireless…….either increase or stay the same in the coming year”. Now, the among of wireless users are raised. This shows how significant the wireless to people especially student for make them comfortable in their daily life. This main idea to know the priority of wireless among the second year Manufacturing Student use wireless in a day.
We've decided to make questionnaire among second year Manufacturing Student of UMP, observation of their knowledge about wireless technology, and also research from journals, books, and newspapers after discussion with group members.
2.2 Advantages of wireless technology
There are many advantages to implementing a wireless network as an alternative of a wireless network nowadays. The wireless is needed as a main priority of users in the current environment. According to Leslie Moody and Dr. Gary Schmidt (April 2004); Charp (2002), they was state that “One of the main advantages is flexibility. Along with pre-existing space constraints and the fact that re-wiring older buildings is sometimes a cumbersome task due to the physical aspects of the existing building, wireless is a viable option in older institutions with existing facilities. Plus, expansion of the network in the event that new facilities are built is that wireless networks are easily scalable. There is less physical work required when adding on to the wireless network, than adding on to the traditional LAN (Charp, 2002). Access points can be easily added or upgraded without rethinking the entire infrastructure.
Other advantages of wireless technology are it can be access anytime and anywhere around the area that provided wireless network. People will be able to access learning income from any location they would like for example at cafeteria, hotels and airports. This provides the chance of continuous work even they have to go to outstation. Wireless always depends on distance, geographical situation, and requirements in terms of bandwidth, speed and licenses.
Furthermore, the advantage of wireless is cost. Charp (2002) claims that “Although wireless network interface cards cost more than standard network cards, if you're implementing a wireless across the area, it is cheaper to install a wireless network rather than running wire to all existing buildings”. This shows that wireless more affordable to the person to access the internet.
Even though, the wireless technology gives more advantages, there are also have some factor should be consider before going wireless such as designing the network, managing the network, and securing the network.
As a conclusion, the revolution of technology will always develop from time to time as the way to communication with other by sharing the information. This support by Gillespie, when he states that “the technology revolution will continue to be about access to information but also about ways of sharing information. Instructional technology in the next decade will support both synchronous and asynchronous interaction between learner and sources of knowledge and information”.
2.3 Implementation of Wireless Technologies in Education.
Wireless is a technology of advanced communication nowadays. It is getting upgraded days by days. Believe it or not, it’s taking a major part of communication nowadays. Data transmission completed in a split seconds using wireless technologies. This advantage would give benefits to anyone in education field, especially students. They could receive data, stored or sending any data through wireless. Rhea R. Borja (2006), had pointed out that “The percentage of public schools using wireless system has increased fourfold between 2001 and 2005” (VOL. 26 no 9). The statement shows that wireless is well needed in education nowadays.
Plus, several reasons might be explaining why wireless technologies had been used in education. Research conducted by Archie Holmes, Jr. and Kathy J. Schmidt (2002) stated that “portable computers and hand-held devices (PDAs) becoming more prevalent on college campuses because these handheld personal technology tools can fit in a backpack, are affordable and can be accessible via a wireless network…Educational institutions and industry are both exploring how handhelds and wireless environments will change what we do at work and at school”.
There are some types of wireless that been tried to implement in education. Lot of research that involved wireless and education had been carried out off late. These included a study that conducted byT.C. Liu, H.Y. Wang, J.K. Liang, T.W. Chan, H.W. Ko and J.C. Yang (2003), where an ubiquitous technology being used in order to realize the Wireless Technology Enhanced Classroom also known as WiTEC in Taiwan. Same goes to a study conducted by Rhea R. Borja (2006), where newer wireless network is required in nowadays education compared to older network which is slow in speed for example. The study also included the differences and the advantages between older networks and newer networks.
Wireless technologies can teach student to be independent in their study and their life. When browsing trough the internet for example, student must able to know how to seek the information they needed. They should know which sites that can provide trustful information, and which sites are not. They should know how to pick right information by using this wireless technology. Seems mobile phone had been a priority in our life, students are able to use their mobile phone in order to find or to discuss or even attending a virtual class in the future. Wireless technologies can be useful in the future.
Despite helping student to be more independent in their study life, wireless technologies will be able to produce a future generation that is able to modify these technologies nowadays in a better way. This generation will be able to create a new technologies based on wireless technologies in order to enhance education in the future.
